SCENE: Slow fade in on the inside of the back seat of a moving vehicle. We see the landscape pass through the window. Half obstructed, we can also see the 18-year-old girl standing with her forehead against the window. She is staring into the distance. We hear silence for several seconds. Slowly, the sound begins to fade. It is muffled, with bass, and at first the little girl's parents are having a conversation that we don't understand or hear. After a few seconds, the mother calls out what must be the little girl's name, though it's too muffled for us to hear - but it brings the little girl out of her torpor and raises her head. The mother repeats herself, this time we can hear her clearly. Rebecca, for God's sake, can you try for a few hours to listen when other people are talking? Rebecca, the teenager, rubs her eyes on her sleeves, still looking a little off. Sorry, Mom, what were you saying? After shaking her head, the mother makes an aside comment about the driver of the car. She then repeats herself to her daughter. The mother said she would be happy to visit her cousins Harold (and Diane). Rebecca hasn't seen them since high school ended two years ago. Rebecca shrugs, "Yeah, that'll be great," she half-admits. Todd too," the mother says casually, not noticing that this causes Rebecca to grimace with pain, "you know, I don't know why you guys haven't gotten along since high school, you used to be so close. Do you remember that time when... ? The mother continues her anecdote, oblivious, but Rebecca has stopped paying attention. She lies back in her seat, pushes her head back and covers her face with her arms. She lets out a controlled, long but quiet sigh, and her mother's voice begins to distort again.CUT TO TITLE PLATE
Walking up the driveway of a large house, Rebecca's parents (Karen and Bill) are greeted at the top by Harold and Diane, a married couple about the same age as them. Loudly, they greet each other and chat warmly as they move a little closer to the house. The quartet talks about the current state of the house and the weather. They also discuss the contents of Bill's bottle. We see Rebecca slowly emerge from behind the group of four. She stands at the top of the stairs, head down, shyly holding her left arm and grabbing her right hand with one of her hands, as her parents look on. It takes several seconds for the group to notice her, but when they do, her parents laugh at her for being so reclusive, while Harold and Diane greet her warmly and push her forward to hug her. Rebecca is a shy woman, but she seems grateful for the love. Harold and Diane gush over her with the usual family small talk - how old must she be now? Her mother says she turned 18 months old two months ago. She also brags about how fast they are growing. She also brags about how fast they are growing up...), how college is going, she asks if she has a boyfriend yet, etc. Their son Todd is single, but they mention that he hasn't found the right woman yet. He's an older, sensitive, 19-year-old soul, which makes it hard for them to believe that he doesn't have the best intentions. The mention of Todd brings down Rebecca's mood, which had been gradually improving...though she tries not to show it. Rebecca is tired of the constant conversation and wants to escape. She goes to the bathroom to relieve her pain. Harold and Diane are concerned, but Rebecca says she will be fine in a while. They tell her to come join them on the patio as soon as she feels better. Todd is already waiting for everyone. After Rebecca steps out of the frame, Harold, Diane and Bill express their concern. But in hushed tones, they respond that Rebecca is often like this, and that they have learned to accept it.
COUT to a guest room in the house, where Rebecca sneaks in and closes the door quietly. She seems upset and spends some time trying to calm herself. She is surprised when she hears a knock on the door about a minute later. Who is it?" she asks shyly. Her first cousin Todd walks in the door. It's me," Todd says apologetically, "is everything okay? My parents told me you were sick in the bathroom, so I came to see if you needed medicine, but you weren't there. Rebecca seems sad to have been in Todd's company. She says, "I'm fine Todd," bitterly. "I'll be down in the next few minutes, I needed some time." Todd looks confused and hurt. She says the summer after graduation she needed space and then stopped talking to him, making plans or texting him. What's going on with her? She doesn't care - it's not like they are best friends, or even siblings, they are second cousins. That doesn't mean they have to join at the hip. Todd shakes his head, he doesn't understand why she is acting this way. She's acting like she hates him when they were so close.
She lets it slip that she thought the words were a little too close. What does that mean?" asks Todd. She shakes him, "forget it" she replies, but he doesn't back down, no, what does she mean? Rebecca swallows with difficulty. He did not understand? It's hard to believe he's still baffled. He remembers the story of a couple who went to a bar after graduation with fake IDs and some friends. They partied late into the evening. She explains that when she went to order more cocktails, the bartender made a comment about "her and her boyfriend" and pointed to Todd. Rebecca laughed at first, but after returning to the table, she noticed that Todd was very friendly and flirty with her. He even wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She realized he wasn't just friendly, he was in love with her and she needed to break it off. Even though they are only second cousins, it's still a family relationship and she wasn't happy.
Todd seems heartbroken. Why didn't she say anything? She should have known him well enough to know not to worry about his reaction. He is treated like a fool by everyone, and she didn't treat him that way. In fact, he thought she understood him. What was the point of cutting him off without explanation? Rebecca seems uncomfortable - she brushes off his questions and wants to leave but Todd blocks her way. He becomes more confrontational - he says he's noticed she looks miserable, that she's not smiling in the new photos she's been tagged in, that her body language has changed to shut down to everyone. He's worried about her, he just wants to have a fucking conversation with her, he misses her. Why is she acting this way?
Rebecca can't help but cringe when she realizes that he has feelings for her. It's not because he's interested in her, but because she has feelings for him. She had never really realized it (or at least never admitted it to herself) until that night, but it scared her. And it scared her even more that he seemed interested in her too, because it made it even harder to pretend things were normal. He was afraid she would talk about the situation with him, and if she did, she would regret it. So she made the decision to end their relationship.
Todd looks at her in disbelief and scoffs sadly. Well, she was right. Now that he knows how she feels about him, he does NOT want to do something they might regret later. He closes the space and gently reaches his arm towards the wall, to dissuade her from retreating or leaving the room. He wants to make up for lost time. He wants her to make it up to him. He would like to kiss her. Can he kiss her? She lets out a deep sigh, bites her lip... she is determined to say no, but in spite of herself, she says "yes."
